Why Should I Feel Discouraged?

Are not two little sparrows sold for a penny? And yet not one of them will fall to the ground without your Father's leave (consent) and notice. But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, then; you are of more value than many sparrows. {Matt. 10:29-31}

Birds bring me such joy! I love walking through the countryside soaking in their beautiful songs, trying to identify each one. My spirits are lifted when I see falcons gliding effortlessly - circling higher and higher into the atmosphere. I am awestruck at the amazing shape-shifting murmurations of starlings.

The other day as I was coming back from a walk along the Bilsthorpe trail I noticed an unfortunate little sparrow along the roadside. He must have misjudged his timing as he swooped into the front of an oncoming car. I thought of the little sparrows who chatter and play in my backyard, then to see this little guy so still and lifeless...

Sometimes I don't think we value life enough. Both our own and that of the living creatures that surround us. We would be wise to take a few minutes each day and try to see creation as God does. Most of us have read, or at least heard the words of Matthew 10:29-31 at one time or another. We've been told it shows God's love for us, and it definitely does. But maybe we've not seen just how great that love is.

You see, an animal is not "just an animal". Every single creature is amazing with incredible abilities and unique characteristics given to them by God. Every single creature is loved by Him. They all belong to Him and He's entrusted their care to us. That's a lot of responsibility (and another blog post entirely)!

You open Your hand And satisfy the desire of every living thing. The LORD is righteous in all His ways And kind in all His deeds. {Psalm 145:16-17}

God notices and loves all He created. The Creator of heaven and earth, of you and me sees and deeply cares for everything from ants to elephants. He notices when even the tiny sparrow falls.

Words fail me in expressing the great love God has for His creation...and yet He loves us even more! More! This great, consuming, protective, frightening, just, honest and deep love God has for His creation is overwhelming. The love He has for us is beyond our comprehension.

Can I encourage you to take time each week, if not each day, to be still. Turn off your phone. Get out into the natural world and quietly watch the animals. Study them. Pay attention to the details. Feel the wind move through your hair. Notice the clouds. Let your fingers caress flower petals and tiny leaves. Listen to the bird song. Squish your toes in the sand. Know that He is God.

Be still, and know that I am God {Psalm 46:10}
